At Mille et Une Noix, the environment is at the heart of our concerns. Since our beginnings, we have been committed to acting responsibly to preserve the planet.

And in ten years of existence, we have implemented many ecological initiatives! In this article, we reveal 10 of our environmental commitments.

1. A bulk sales network

We have established a strong partnership network with zero-waste grocery stores across the province. This collaboration allows our customers to fill and reuse their own containers, thus contributing to a significant reduction in packaging. Thanks to this initiative, we save thousands of packages every year!

2. A deposit system for bulk containers

To further reduce waste associated with bulk sales, we have implemented a deposit system for the containers used. Zero-waste stores can therefore keep empty nut butter containers for us to collect. We then carefully sterilize them and reuse them to fill new batches of nut butters. This approach allows us to limit the production of new containers.

3. A short supply chain

We prioritize partnerships with local and independent businesses to reduce transportation-related emissions. By limiting the distances our products travel, we help reduce our carbon footprint and support the local economy.

In addition, our butters are prepared locally in Sherbrooke, thus reducing their ecological footprint by limiting the trips needed for them to reach you.

4. Bulk at home

By offering family sizes ranging from 2kg to 15kg, we also offer our customers for whom bulk grocery shopping is not accessible the possibility of refilling (and therefore reusing) their containers at home. This method requires fewer raw materials and limits multiple deliveries associated with smaller containers.

5. The imperfects

In an eco-responsible approach, we created the "The Imperfects" category to reduce food waste by offering nut butters at a reduced price that do not quite meet our usual high quality standards.

In this selection, you will find perfectly edible butters at a reduced price for various reasons, whether because they are close to or slightly past their "best before" date, have developed natural oil separation due to storage in our warehouses, or are offered in a non-standard container or format.

6. Glass jars

In 2019, we made the decision to replace our plastic containers with glass jars. This initiative aims not only to reduce the use of plastic, a widely overused material with harmful environmental effects, but also to promote reuse. Our glass jars are durable and can be reused countless times, and in many ways. Moreover, once properly recycled by dropping them off at a collection point near you, they can be transformed into new glass products.

7. Palm oil-free

All our nut butters are free of palm oil (or any other hydrogenated oil for that matter). This decision is part of our commitment to protect the fragile ecosystems in the regions where palm oil is produced, while offering healthy products.

8. An organic range

For 9 years, we have been offering a selection of organic nut butters, certified by Ecocert Canada. This certification guarantees that our products meet the strictest standards for organic production, minimizing the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, promoting biodiversity, and preserving natural resources.

9. Peanuts, an ecological crop

Peanut butter is our flagship product, and it is made from a food whose cultivation has positive effects on the environment! Peanuts, as legumes, have the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen in the soil, which promotes soil fertility and thus reduces dependence on nitrogen fertilizers. In addition, their cultivation requires relatively little water compared to other crops, which contributes to the preservation of this essential resource.

10. Local and organic secondary ingredients

Although nuts are not grown locally, we strive to use local ingredients, such as honey and maple products, or organic ingredients, such as chocolate, to complement our gourmet blends. This approach reduces the ecological footprint associated with our ingredients!
